6/10/11 The great tennis star of the 70'S & early 80's, TRACY AUSTIN, recounts her experience as a 14-year-old playing at wimbledon (go to 1:00 )..(& then flying back and sitting next to fellow classmates studying Spanish...imagine how the other students felt ..a little humbled I suppose.. imagine watching "the girl" who sits across from you in Spanish class on TV at wimbledon over the weekend and then seeing her back in class a few days later).. ..& U.S. OPEN (which she won in 1979 & 1981, beating Chris Evert & Martina Navratilova) this was at a special event in Palos Verdes (where she was grew up & still resides), sponsored by Malaga Bank & the Palos Verdes library among others. It was a real honor to see & hear Tracy Austin...I definitely remember watching her on TV when I was growing up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She spoke about her own personal experience as a tennis star and how she moved on into other aspects of the sports, including broadcasting, and mentioned that she will be at Wimbledon 2011 covering the event. She talked a little about McEnroe (she has been a broadcast partner with him from time to time) ,also mentioned Martina Navritolova & her dogs & the huge house she would rent at Wimbledon (2:40).
..also the concern of American tennis that there seems to be no rising stars,and what they are trying to do about it... ..very nice event & Tracy Austin is also very nice.. she even spoke to me as I entered (not shown on video)... they were serving free food (excellent sandwiches) & she was in front of me in the food line & had accidentally grabbed an extra plate...& she was putting it back & said to me, "Don't worry, I didn't use this plate..." ha ha.. I'm not worried..maybe I should have asked her to sign it and take it with me as a collectors item..
