2/24/12 blessed sac, 12 p, fr anglo m"...Woody Allen re 90% of success is just showing up...it sounds nice, but not sure it’s true..here the Israelites had shown up, were going thru the motions, were sacrificing, ..but what was missing was their hearts, he wanted more..likewise lent, fasting & praying..we can just go thru the mechanics of it..but not a formula ..when I was a kid, st Jude prayers were popular..my sister getting divorced..parents upset, tried the 9 days St Jude prayer..but she got divorced anyways,...it’s like abracadabra..magic..can't depend on it to make god do something for us..must seek god's will, for Israel it’s easier for them to do a task & then sit & wait for god to do his thing, but god wants them to change their hearts, ..more like him,/.purpose of fasting is to make us less selfish..[it’s a means to an end, not an end in itself?]

2/21/12 PRIEST WRONG RE BOOK OF JAMES NOT IN PROTESTANT BIBLE

[Did I hear him wrong, or did he say "the book of James" isn't in the "protestant Bible"? Hmmm, that's NOT true. Protestants DO read the book of James & it IS in the "protestant Bible." Historically, Luther apparently had some reservations to the book of James, but that's not so true today for protestants or even Lutherans as far as I know. There may be differences of emphasis on faith v works depending on the denomination or even a particular pastor, but still, book of James is included & used in worship & liturgy]
M:" re letter of James..does not appear in protestant bibles [wrong, it is in rot bible] ..Jesuits such as myself say "we are sinners but profoundly loved by god". ..I haven't been here long enough to know what conflicts exist, thank god, but all parishes have them..James reminds us to practice the lord's prayer, ..ties that bind us, ..adulterers ..if u love the world u r in enmity with god, ..going on to say that god's grace is stronger, ..to make this day an act of fidelity, renewal of mutual commitment ^forgiveness..Ignatius recommended taking a stick to push demons out of the house, don't recommend it if people r around..but we can exhale that is not all of Jesus, .."

Why this demon or at another level, when god gives an answer to prayer, sometimes he answers on more than one level,..indeed. literally yes .pray more, but deeper, ..Jesus may be speaking of "this demon" as the lack of faith of the father, that's a greater demon..'oh faithless generation"..that's a ..strong interjection, for Jesus to utter that, its bigger than a boy being possessed..the father himself says "if u can do this lord? What unbelief ! That may be why the demon could not be cast out for so long..how about us, ? What demons are we afflicted by ? 2/11/12 St dom, sf, "in fullness of time god sent angel, announced a baby, son of David, son of god, hope of the messiah, reestablish friendship w god...all creation let out a cry of joy..promise of immortality..fullness of this son's youth passed..Mary Joseph @ wedding but they had no wine..Mary whispered to son..Jesus says "my hour has not yet come.."..odd reply..but she's unfazed ..tells the attendants to "do whatever he tells u"..and he changed the water to wine..changing us into vessels of salvation, ..a spring of clean waters, grotto of hope for sick & sinful..to come for relief..this hope of healing fulfilled..sign of a greater hope...salvation..thru His holy spirit..we have the hope of heaven..at Lourdes..1899..fella working on train..they collided w another..he almost died..paralyzed waist down..2 years..refused to go to Lourdes..had no faith, finally he went..1st to confession..Eucharist..sacrament..soon after they carried him. To pool of waters..he passed out..they thought maybe dead..but as they wheeled him back to the hotel..priest passed by..he blessed the group..suddenly he sat up..muscles atrophied but he walked..e ate a full meal for first time..he had been healed..! Yet a sign of something much greater..soul converted..next 50 years..Gabriel returned..his formerly paralyzed body..now were the hands & feet of Christ for others...we too have hope of healing & salvation..history points us to the lesson of cana , of Lourdes..healing we receive..points us to greater hope..we become temple of the spirit..as we seek healing..& grace to act on the healing..persons whose lives & actions reveal salvation...come to this day..we come seeking god's grace..that we might become..those who do whatever he tells us"

1/27/12 St Dominic "Churc re nre evangelization...& we all have a part to play..sowing seed, watering, harvesting,..as ugooutas gardeners..u have to decide on case by case basis ..this or that person..what he or she needs..initial sowing of the seed or watering, or ready to beharvested,takes spritual,prudence, like being a doctor,diagnosis,..what does this person need, 2nd part, say to self, am I the one that should do this, this person may need to hear the good news but maybe not from me,..u may say this person is ready, but I'm not the one to do it..our sense is that we simply don't know how the church grows, ..do the little that we can in each case, but don't do too much or the wrong thing, don't want to get in the way, but let it work in the heart of the person, and put it in the hands of the one who gives us the gift of faith
1/27/12 bh, good shep, 12p m'One of the biggest frustrations that teachers have,..can be summed up, ..that it is impossible to answer an unasked question,..lot of teachers try to teach w/o students being morivatedby q's..some say to me “why don't u put it in the bulletin'..I say "they do read, but if there's something in there they don't ask abt it passes over you..that's why Jesus spoke in parables..we think its a story tot ell convey a message..so we say why not just tell me straight out..but the real reason for a parable is to raise questions..if u notice thru out gospels, the way Jesus taught was to begin w a question..these parables somewhat exaggerated,..so vegi w a q rethe kingdom..what is the kingdom..Jesus gives animage of something 180 degrees counter to our frenetic..to try to please god..Jesus says the kingdom comes w+ u doing anything..u simply receive it, welcome it..so that it will grow in your life, if that bc the q..how do we let the kingdom grow..that's a diff q. .

Today’s readings..letter of Paul to titus.more of a greeting, u see peace to this household, how we greet people. "Grace mercy peace..."...say "peace to this house.."..often we r competitors..try to box people make them feel inferior. How u greet people says a lot abt how u feel abt yourself, life, .your understanding..prodigal son..father says nothing about son's past ..how have u greeted people in the past week "I'm better"? Or otherwise, joke, trying to put them below u, put them down, subtly, mark of a true believer ..make them feel good even when its not merited..look see god's beloved children, sign of holiness, unmerited rejoicing, versus name calling, bringing up history of past, whatever it might be,...do u greet those w "grace mercy and peace from our father peace to the household, .." may the lord who greets us today @ Eucharist, beautiful, "peace to your house" we have done nothing to merit the embrace of god, ..Jesus affirms us, wishes us to affirm those we meet..likewise"

1/25 St James 12p, Asian fr, m: A hypothetical question..don't answer..do u know what Paul actually experienced on way to Damascus ..we could understand wo mnowing the content..we may say yes conversion , we can relate..? But can we..church has trained us to really communicate.those ..firsthand..knowledge, maybe not as mstical,we don’t say I understand, we say I know what it ..face to face..but doesn't happen to most caths, and I fault the church for that, they gave me same answer, why did I leave the cath ch. What..I found family and friends, but I never ..we need to try harder, but church is big, but we are so much bigger than Mormons, urge people to be more friendly and intimate..but what I've seen last 20 yrs..ifauly..wher do ..caths go to, ? Prot evangelical..they say "we do meet god here" ..and I fault cath church , Christianity up to..I know I taught theology in Jesuit ins. 1/25/12 am mart, 8a m" one of my fav feast days, conversion of St. Paul/.tells me there is real hope for conversion,..growing up I used to watch oral Roberts...people would come to him, he'd touch their forehead..they'd fall down get up & be converted, but conversion is more..we have to live Jesus, ..fr Richard Moore? Said conversion is a fundamental change in who we r..stop focusing on "god out there" and "look outward from the god that is within each one of us". Take that god ands share it w everyone we meet..here is Paul/Saul..a roman Jew..persecuting gentiles..arresting them..trials/.then, on way to Damascus "why r u persecuting me;, blinding light, Jesus was telling him we r all part of the body of Christ, we r persecuting Jesus, know the god within each one of us, ..first reading after conversion Paul told by Jesus to go and share good news, same message from mark, at end, after resurrection, Jesus visits apostles tells them to "go tell good news", conversion for must of us doesn't happen in an instant as w St Paul ..but a lifetime..maybe u can recall something happen. Inside of u, think abt the moment..prob 30 years ago, was training to be ccd instructor to teach catechism to kids, during lent, priest invited all of the class up on the altar, being close to Jesus, that was a pivotal point in my conversion, fr gives a moment to reflect on the liturgy, spend a few minutes today, in own life, that u recognized god in you ..being asked to share, bros& sis, that's what it means to be converted spiritually in Christ
